Guildford lies on the River Wey, where it cuts a valley through the North Downs. The river crossing was a ford still called Harrow Way. Guildford probably has Saxon origins, although some Roman artifacts have been found nearby. George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, built a "hospital" in 1619, which still presides over the high street properties. A magnificent red brick Grade 1 listed Jacobean building, it still provides shelter and accommodation for the elderly and poor of the community.
